Additional accommodation contract considerations

Be sure to check the yearly charge as well as the weekly charge because some contracts are longer than others.

If you are studying Nursing and Midwifery or Art Foundation, different contract lengths and start dates are available to match your course.

If you confirm your room booking, it is a legally binding commitment to pay for the whole contract length.

Many halls require you to pay your first rent instalment before arriving.

You do not need a guarantor for DMU owned/managed halls, but private providers will request one. If you do not have a guarantor you could have to pay the full annual rent upfront (as well as things like booking payments and damage deposits) before you can move in (see specific tenancy agreements).

Your student loan is not usually be deposited until after you have enrolled on your course. Contact our Student Finance and Welfare team at sfw@dmu.ac.uk if you need advice on paying accommodation fees in advance.

Some providers charge for payment by debit or credit card.

Late payment charges

If you are staying in DMU owned and managed halls, there are no late payment charges unless we pass the debt to a collection agent (after a statement and two reminder letters). At this point, we add a 10 per cent administrative charge.

If the debt is eventually pursued through the courts, you could be liable for costs.

Any outstanding debts to private providers could incur charges.
