Supporting the Career Development of Researchers

The Concordat, developed and supported by Research Councils UK and Universities UK and supported by Vitae, is an agreement between the funders and employers of researchers in the UK. According to Vitae, "The Concordat aims to increase the attractiveness and sustainability of research careers in the UK and to improve the quantity, quality and impact of research for the benefit of UK society and the economy.  It articulates key principles for the support and management of research”.

De Montfort University (DMU) is fully committed to implementing The Concordat.  In line with DMU's Research Strategy for 2013 - 2017, the Directorate of Research, Business and Innovation (RBI) and Graduate School Office (GSO) work with Faculties to support our researchers in their research and career development.  We seek to align our activities to the 7 key principles of The Concordat which cover all areas of research activity. |

HR Excellence in Research Award

In 2010 DMU gained the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award. This acknowledges our alignment with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment.

The Award runs for a period of 4 years and includes a mid-term review.  This evaluation took place in Winter 2012 - 13 and included reviewing our progress against the original action plan, obtaining feedback from researchers at DMU, and proposing a new set of activities for 2012 - 2014.

The resulting progress report and action plan approved by Vitae in May 2013 resulting in DMU maintaining its award. Links to these documents can be found opposite under 'supporting information'.

Activities and Programmes

The University has a number of activities and programmes which are aimed towards implementing The Concordat, these include:

  • Specific researcher training development programmes and events;
  • Participation in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) and Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS);
  • Competitive research funds, including annual calls under the Research Investment Fund and Research Leave Scheme (total investment c.£100,000 per annum);
  • Applying for and maintaining appropriate HR quality measures including the HR Excellence in Research Award 2010 and the Athena Swan Bronze Award (bid submitted in 2013);
  • Central support for researchers in regards to research skills, entrepreneurship training, career management and allied activities.

Our support programmes and activities are reviewed annually and, following evaluation and feedback from our researchers, updated to reflect the needs of our staff.
