Everyone has mental health, however some of us may experience what may be termed as ‘mental health problems’ or ‘mental health difficulties’. It is an often used statistic that 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem every year.

Coming to university is for the majority of students a fantastic experience. It’s a chance to meet new people, have lots of new opportunities, achieve your academic goals and work towards a career.

It’s not always that straightforward though as there are a number of challenges along the way that can have an impact on your mental health. Some of the common ones are:

  • Feeling home sick
  • Difficulties making friends
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Feeling like you don’t fit in
  • Financial issues
  • Feeling isolated
  • Sleep disturbance 
  • Not sure if you are on the right course
  • Accommodation issues
  • Family issues

We want to try and ensure that all students have a positive experience at DMU. So it is important that you ask for advice and support as early as possible with these issues to reduce the possible impact on your mental health.

If you have an existing mental health condition, some of the above can have a greater impact on you and your studies. There is support available at DMU from the Mental Health Inclusion Team.

Our team will be able to offer you the following;

  • An assessment of your emotional wellbeing, looking at how all aspects of your life may be impacting on your studies.
  • Support and advice on how to apply for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA).
  • Assessment of whether you require practical adjustment’s made to your teaching, coursework hand-in times or exams to try and reduce the impact that your mental health condition has on your studies at university.
  • Support when discussing your needs to your teaching staff if you require this.
  • Practical goal setting and suggestions of how to address certain issues you may be experiencing.
  • Support accessing local statutory services such as the NHS.
  • Signposting to agencies who are able to support students with alcohol and substance use issues.
  • Signposting to counselling services.

Making contact with the Mental Health Inclusion team

All current DMU students who would like to make an appointment with the following teams please see information below:

To ensure that we direct you to the appropriate service you must first book a Single Point of Access Appointment (SPA) where your needs will be assessed. These appointments can be booked via MyGateway.

If you have already been working with one of the teams mentioned then please contact them in the first instance, follow the link on team name to email them.

What is a Single Point of Access Appointment (SPA)?

  • A 30 minute appointment.
  • An opportunity to discuss your situation with a member of support staff.
  • You will be offered advice on the day and referral to relevant support staff within student welfare.
  • At the end of the appointment, you will be given an action plan of what to do next.

Informing DMU about your mental health condition

We strongly recommend that you inform DMU if you have any existing mental health conditions. By disclosing, it will enable DMU to make you aware of the support you are entitled to. If you do have some medical evidence to support your condition you may wish to provide DMU with a copy. More about disclosure.
