Description

These are turbulent times in American politics. The presidency of Donald Trump is like no other, and as the mid-term elections approach, the nation faces a vast range of challenges from trade wars to climate change amid intense partisan conflict. Join former US Congressional Representatives Tom Petri (Republican - Wisconsin) and Martin Lancaster (Democrat – North Carolina), in conversation with DMU Emeritus Professor Philip Davies, sharing their insights on contemporary American politics. The discussion will be open to questions and answers from the audience.

Former Congressman Martin Lancaster

Martin Lancaster was a Member of the United States Congress from 1987 to 1995 representing North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, serving on a range of committees including Armed Services and Agriculture. He is recognised as a leader in federal environment, Armed Services and education policies, and in 2011 was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Former Congressman Tom Petri

Tom Petri served 18 terms in the House of Representatives for Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District until 2015. He has been a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Committee on Education and the Workforce as well as chairing duties on a number of subcommittees. He served in the Peace Corps during the 1960s in Somalia. In 2015, he was appointed an honorary Office of the British Empire.

Join us at 6.30pm for a drinks reception and canapes before the discussion begins at 7pm.

The event is part of Congress to Campus, a week long schedule of activities and events which provide a first-hand insight into real life international politics.
