Square Mile and students
As one of the most exciting and dynamic universities in the UK, DMU ensures that our students graduate with the creativity and practical skills employers value and industries crave.
Our volunteering opportunities can help you enrich your university experience by helping the community and taking satisfaction from the positive changes you deliver to the local area.
Many of the projects which make up the Square Mile programme of activity are embedded into degree coursework, ensuring hundreds of participating students gain skills which make them stand out in an increasingly difficult job market.
Students who take part have their efforts recognised in the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which is given to you by DMU on completion of your course to show potential employers.
There are also qualifications and certificates available for some of the project work undertaken.
Square Mile has developed partnerships with major employers and organisations such as Hewlett-Packard, the NHS and Leicestershire Police. Leading charities including The Prince’s Trust, Diabetes UK, YMCA and Refugee Action have also benefitted from working with us.
Working with Square Mile is your chance to get involved in the unparalleled opportunities being created to improve our neighbours’ health and skills, increase youth activities and create a sense of community.
What our volunteers say
“Square Mile is what got me the job I have now. Getting involved with Square Mile was what gave me the edge when it came to employment. Not only is volunteering a great way to create positive change in the world around you, but it also gives you the chance to develop additional skills and present employers with proof of your abilities before you've even entered the working world.”
Kelly Rist, English Literature graduate and Square Mile volunteer
“Making time to take part in projects such as these and seeing the difference volunteering can make to local residents and communities means there’s so much more to be gained from university than a graduate certificate”
Matthew Cox, DMU Accounting & Finance student and Square Mile volunteer
“I have enjoyed my time volunteering at the Square Mile this year, and regret not getting involved in my first year at DMU. I recommend anyone and everyone to volunteer with the Square Mile project. You won’t regret it!”
Amir Mahmoud, Medical Science student and Square Mile volunteer
